Boxing Day test - Debutant Sam Konstas and Jasprit Bumrah Shines on Day 1

Konstas and Bumrah shines on Day 1 at MCG test 2024

The much-awaited Boxing Day Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) began on December 26, with Pat Cummins winning the toss and electing to bat first against Rohit Sharma's India. Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja opened the innings for Australia. Debutant Sam Konstas showcased an aggressive intent, particularly against Jasprit Bumrah, hitting a six off his delivery, which quickly became the talk of the town. Konstas continued to attack all the bowlers, hitting them all over the park.

Rohit Sharma brought in Ravindra Jadeja to break the partnership, and Jadeja delivered by dismissing the fearless Konstas. Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja steadied the ship, maintaining the momentum for Australia. Khawaja reached a half-century but was dismissed by Bumrah. Steve Smith then joined Labuschagne, and the pair took Australia past 200 runs.

However, once the partnership looked threatening, Washington Sundar bowled brilliantly and dismissed Labuschagne for 72. Rohit immediately brought Bumrah back into the attack, and Bumrah struck again, removing the dangerous Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. The game shifted slightly in India's favor.

A small partnership developed between Steve Smith and Alex Carey, but Akash Deep dismissed Carey for 31. At stumps on Day 1, Australia was 311/6. We’ll see how the game progresses on Day 2.
